The Right Side of Breakfast

Cup & A Gold Spoon by Carly Ogletree

John 21:3-6
Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”
They said to him, “We are going with you also. ” They went out and immediately got into a boat, and that night they caught nothing.
But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know it was Jesus.
Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”
They answered him, “No.”
And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.”
So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

I wonder how often we wake up on the wrong side of breakfast. The disciples had woken up many times before this encounter with Jesus. I’m sure they’d been fishing their whole lives, and yet, they still caught nothing. Then they wake up in the morning and prepare to start the same routine of catching nothing. We catch a lot of nothing too. We expect different results from the same routine, and I wonder, ‘how many times have we missed Jesus in our presence?’ What if we’ve been doing breakfast all wrong?

When we read that Jesus told them to cast their nets on the right side of the boat, I don’t believe Jesus was just referring to a direction, I believe He was giving a correction. Jesus is telling us there’s a right way to do things. There’s a right way to catch what we want. There’s a right way to get fed every day. We’ve been doing breakfast all wrong! Everyday we’re casting our nets: our dreams, our plans, our visions, our love, our peace, our WHATEVER on the wrong side, in the wrong way, and we’re looking for God-given results. We’re casting on the wrong side. We’re out of position.

Here’s how you get on the right side of breakfast:

  1. Acknowledge the presence of God: Jesus asked them, “Children, have you any food?” The real question was, “Children, have you got anything without me?” We can’t expect results from God without acknowledging Him. Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other things will be added unto you.” We have to seek Him first in our prayer life, in our plans, and in our dreams if we’re expecting His blessing. God only blesses what He’s involved in. He will not sponsor anything that’s outside of Him.
  2. Get in position: God has many spiritual gifts and talents inside you that are ready to be birthed but you have to be in position. Not to get graphic but when a woman goes into a labor, one of the first things the doctor has her do is get into position. You have to be ready to deliver this thing! Get your affairs in order. Ask the Lord to reveal to you what’s out of order, and if you’re out of order. Have Him to correct your path so you’re prepared to receive all you’re praying for. Most importantly, get your heart in position. God is looking to bless those with a pure heart. What’s the purpose for your prayers? Is it for you or for God’s glory? We live in a world where everything is about us but truly everything is about Him. In His presence is where your blessings are because He loves you and He loves to bless you but only when you seek Him in sincerity and humility. God is not your genie.
  3. Find your meal: Jesus didn’t just give them what they were after, the disciples had to look for it. There’s still work on your part and don’t ever think you’ll be able to escape that. Who knows how long the disciples were actually out there fishing? But then again, who cares! When the Lord tells you to do something, don’t worry about how long it’s going to take or how hard it’s going to be. You only need to be concerned about your hunger. There’s a desire within you to do the things of God. Your spirit longs to make God proud. You want to do the right thing and you want to be in position with Him that you may be blessed in the long run. Focus on that and Focus on Jesus. Then get to looking! Everyday, every morning, you should look for an opportunity from God? Just ask Him, “Lord, how can I be used today?” or “God, what do you have planned for me today?” Now you’ve accomplished all three in one: you’ve acknowledged the Lord, you got into position, and now you’re ready to eat!

I pray a supernatural blessing falls on you and that you’ve been encouraged this morning. I hope you know what whatever God says you can have, YOU CAN AND WILL HAVE. There’s nothing too big for God and there’s no reason why He wouldn’t want to bless you. He’s a good Father! That’s what He does! Keep your heart open and your hands out to receive the blessings that God is about to pour out onto your day and onto your life. I pray you’re on the right side of breakfast this morning. Amen.
