God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom he has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds
And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me
I remember being a young girl in church and hearing about the voice of God. I was curious but afraid. I didn’t think God would just speak to anybody. So, one day, I asked my mother, “How do you know God is speaking to you? What does God’s voice sound like?” And she turned to me and smiled and said, “He has a still, small voice.” That was it. And she wasn’t wrong, however, I had more questions. I have a still, small voice in my head all the time called my conscience but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t God. As I reconciled my relationship to the Lord and grew with Him, I began to understand His voice. Knowing God’s voice is like knowing anyone’s voice — the more you know Him, the more you recognize it. Just think about it, why is it that you don’t question the voice of your parents, friends, or spouse but you question the voice of God, your Father and Creator? The more you spend time with Him the more you’ll be able to differentiate His voice with just another thought bouncing around in your head.
In Hebrews, the word of God states that God has spoken at various times and in various ways in the past and that now He speaks through us through His Son, Jesus Christ, whom has given us His Holy Spirit to teaches us all things. What that means is God has a pattern of speaking. Some believe that the ways God spoke in the Old Testament compared to how He speaks now is different but I believe the Old Testament leaves us with a reference point. No, God doesn’t physically come down to earth and speak to us like He did with Moses but I believe that we can ascend to where He is spiritually in order to hear from Him. Also, God still gives visions and dreams and though we can’t always rely on every vision and dream that comes to our minds and spirits, we can rely on the word of God and the Holy Spirit to give us revelation on what God is trying to tell us through these images. The signs and wonders of God doesn’t come with an expiration date.
In Joel, the prophet states that God will pour our His Spirit on all flesh, which He did after Jesus died, rose, and ascended into Heaven. As a Christian, you have the Holy Spirit residing inside of you and His Spirit brings the spirit of prophesy, visions, and dreams to you, as the Spirit allows. The spirit of prophesy means speaking what “Thus says the Lord.” God’s Spirit will speak to your spirit and allow you hear what God is saying for you to convey or relay His message to others for His purposes. Visions are images given from the Lord that allow you to foresee God’s will in an area of life. Lastly, dreams are similar to visions, however, the difference is dreams happen when you’re at rest versus a vision can happen anywhere at anytime. Either way, all of these are possible for you and me if the Holy Spirit resides in us.
The final question to all of these is this, “How do I know it’s God?” Jesus says this in John, “My sheep hear My voice.” He also repeats Himself throughout the Gospels by saying, “Whoever has ears, let them hear!” If you belong to Him, you will recognize Him as you walk alongside Him and become familiar with His word. His Spirit will speak to your spirit and you will know it’s God. 1 John tells us to test every spirit to see whether or not it’s of God. If the voice, vision, or dream that you receive is from God, then it will always be confirmed by His word. God’s voice is slow to speak, and it’s a still, small voice. His voice is gentle and kind and patient with you. The enemy will try and deceive you in this area but you must have your helmet of salvation on and stay guarded at all times. Guard your spiritual ears with His love and truth and as you grow spiritually, His voice will become second nature to you.
