[Paul speaking to the church in Ephesus] And to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden IN God who created all things through Jesus Christ; to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him
As we continue discussing living a for purpose life, I want us to focus our eyes on the church as a whole, the body of Christ. Why are we here? If you’ve given your life to Christ and you now have a relationship Him, why can’t you just go on to Heaven? You’ve probably wondered this once or twice. If Heaven is so good and earth is so bad, why doesn’t Jesus just come and get us already? Why are we still here suffering?
When God created mankind, He didn’t create the church that we think of. He didn’t create an institution where we only meet once or twice a week and like each other’s post on Facebook. He created relationships. He created us to have a vertical relationship with Himself and a horizontal relationship with others. In the relationship that we now have with Christ came the answers to the mysteries that were always hidden in God. Our eyes have now been opened to the truth and we should know who we are, who God is, and why we’re here. These are the mysteries of life.
Paul was teaching the church in Ephesus what their purpose was in being the church. We’re not just here for decoration. We’re not just here to do community service and go on our way to Heaven. Remember: we’re saved by FAITH and not by works. So, why does the church act as just another nonprofit organization? Ephesians 3:9-12 tells us that just as Paul was trying to make the church see the fellowship of the mystery [which is in God], we’re to do the same. We’re to teach others what our relationship with Jesus Christ has to do with knowing God, the Father. We’re supposed to show others through our lives that Jesus is the only access point to understanding God’s eternal purpose.
In short, we’re supposed to display God’s eternal purpose on earth and why it works. God created everything and we’re supposed to display the ‘why’ of it all and direct our answers back to Christ. Not only to unbelievers but to the principalities and powers roaming the earth. Just like God has a Spirit, the Holy Spirit, the enemy has unseen forces working on the earth and within others to steal, kill, and destroy us. He wants to solve the ‘why’ in people’s lives and direct all answers away from Christ. He wants people to believe that life just happened on accident. He wants people to lose hope and believe that their life has no meaning and their afterlife has no meaning. He wants people to believe that a relationship with God is unreal, unbelievable, and impossible. You may have noticed that life has gotten more challenging since becoming a Christian. That is because you are now a threat to Satan’s kingdom, whereas, before you were his moving piece. But now you can prove out God’s answers to unsolved mysteries in people’s lives by living as Christ lived.
Now that you’re in Christ you must live for the purpose of challenging the enemy’s kingdom with God’s truth. You must understand that you have power and authority on earth and you weren’t left to wait on Heaven, rather you were placed here to bring Heaven down to earth. You were placed here to prove that in Christ, God is real and Heaven is a promise attached to the relationship. You were placed here to display that God’s gifts of the Spirit are still working and His fruits are still flourishing. You were placed here to make known to the kingdom of darkness that the Kingdom of God is at hand! You were placed here to make known that God is not dead, He is alive and returning for us because He loves us. You were placed here to show that there isn’t a promise that God hasn’t kept. You were placed here to reveal the mysteries of God to a confused and dying world.
The world wants to know where true peace, love, joy, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control comes from. Until Christ comes back, the only Jesus they’re going to see is in us − the church. We are not an institution or an organization, we are the salt and the light of the earth (Matthew 5:13-14). We are the difference makers and the chain breakers in Christ. We are the exception in a world bound to sin and death. We are purpose bearers on this earth. We are the church.
